Malcolm X Admirer Guilty of Stealing Diary

Douglas Henderson must have believed that it was by any means necessary that he had to have the late Black Civil Rights Leader Malcolm X's diary. The former court clerk admitted yesterday to stealing the journal and said that the incident occurred while he was an employee of the Manhattan Supreme Court. Henderson claims that he was an admirer of Malcolm X and cited that as his reason for stealing the journal. The theft was brought to light in May of last year when Malcolm X's children discovered the missing diary at an auction when a dealer offered the diary for sale. The diary, which was on the fallen leader when he was assassinated, was used as incriminatory evidence during the trial against his killers. When the trial had ended, the diary was held in a safe in Manhattan Supreme Court, before it was stolen by Henderson. According to The Daily News, Henderson stole the diary in 1991 and only sold it in 1997 because he needed money for rent. Henderson faces up to seven years in prison, but pleaded guilty to charges of third-degree grand larceny and will receive five years probation on September 5th for theft. The diary is set to be rightfully bestowed to Malcolm X's children after the sentencing of Henderson.

Eminem's Bodyguard to Release Tell All Book

Eminem's former bodyguard, Byron Williams will be releasing a book about the outrageous rapper. The book entitled, Shady Bizzness tells of Eminem's cheating on his wife Kim and his alcohol and drug use. According to the New York Daily News, excerpts of the book claim that he "hides behind the character of Slim Shady...which comes out when he's drunk or high. About six hours into a recording session, he's taken his second hit of ecstasy and he's drinking his Bacardi rum. He's intoxicated, but he's coming out with some phat stuff."

The book will also allegedly tell of his sexapades with groupies and one underage female who unsuccessfully tried to throw herself at the rapper. Williams also told the New York Daily News, "A young lady in Swedan. I mean a very, very young lady. She had us all fooled at first. She had all kinds of fake IDs. A press statement released by King's son Dexter and CBS president Andrew Heyward read, "We are very pleased that we could resolve the issues in this matter to everyone's satisfaction." In the agreement, CBS will make a contribution to The Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Non-Violent Social Change. Kid Rock Sued By Ex-Manager For $4 Million

Kid Rock is being sued to the tune of $4 million by his recently ousted manager, who claims Rock fired him on the heels of his resurrecting the rapper's formerly stagnant career.

The suit was filed in U.S. District Court in Manhattan by Stephen Hutton/Uppercut Management, who managed Rock -- real name Robert Ritchie --from 1994 through his recent firing on June 28, on Monday (July 10).

The suit claims Ritchie and Hutton entered into an exclusive, three-year management/artist agreement in 1996 whereby Hutton was to receive 10 percent of any and all gross monies earned by Ritchie before a record contract was secured and 15 percent thereafter.

"Hutton's insightful marketing and management efforts enabled Ritchie to obtain a significant recording agreement with a major record label, Atlantic," claims the suit. "Indeed, in recognition of the caliber and quality of Hutton's services, after the stated expiration of the term of the agreement, Ritchie requested that Hutton continue to serve as personal manager to Ritchie, under the terms and condition of the agreement."

However, according to the suit, Kid Rock has failed to live up to his end of the bargain. "Despite Hutton's devotion and hard work, and regardless of the incredible results Hutton obviously achieved for Ritchie, which have enabled Ritchie to enjoy enormous wealth and status, Ritchie has simply chosen to intentionally and deliberately refuse to pay Hutton the commission rightly due him under the terms of the agreement."

The suit also accuses Kid Rock of concealing documents, records, and information from Hutton in order to prevent Hutton from obtaining the proper monies due as well as offering Hutton a "far less" sum of money than that to which he is allegedly entitled. Hutton is suing for breach of contract, quantum meruit, unjust enrichment, and declaratory judgment.

"Against the backdrop of a dismal track record, Hutton, who had tremendous faith in Ritchie, took on the daunting challenge of turning Ritchie's career path around," says the suit. "Unfortunately, Kid Rock's rise to fame has been coupled with a marked increase in grandiosity and a marked decrease in gratitude."

Spike Lee Blasts The Patriot

Director Spike Lee, famous for his movies on depicting the Black experience in America, is taking a stab at Mel Gibson's new movie, The Patriot. The director, who has devoted much of his work to positively and intellectually representing Black people, is fuming mad. Lee claims that the film deliberately ignores the atrocities of the enslavement of Black people in colonial American history. Lee implies that historical amnesia is being practiced and wrote a letter expressing his dissatisfaction to The Hollywood Reporter stating that the film " dodged around, skirted about, or completely ignored slavery. How convenient was it for screenwriter Robert Rodat to have Mel Gibson's character not be a slaveholder?" The opinionated director insinuates that he and his wife went to see the movie only to be extremely disappointed and angry because of the racist implications and intentional neglect of Native American and African American's role in American society. Lee's most recent film, Summer of Sam, starred Mira Sorvino and John Leguizamo, was released on July 2nd of last year. His next film, Kings of Comedy, is scheduled to released on August 10th.

Too Short Willing to Jump the Broom

Too Short recently talked about his plans for marriage and settling down. He said, "At 30, I threw the policy out the window that I'll never get married. I'm 34 now and I feel that if it hits me, it hits me. I'm not gonna fight it anymore. But really, the only woman that I'll ever marry is the woman that comes along and I'm like, 'I can't be without her. I don't wanna be without her.' And if you feel that way, it's all good. I always said ain't nothing wrong with love, but I just happen to be a player for life. But, I don't just be having a bunch of women all the time. When I find me a good one, I try to make it work. So marriage, it may happen. But, it will be the one that I can't live without." Too Short is scheduled to release his 13th album, You Nasty, on September 12th. Dr. J's Son Found Dead

It seems as if the son of NBA basketball legend Julius Erving, has been found. A body thought to be Cory Erving was discovered in a car in a pond in Florida on Friday. Although authorities are speculating that Erving's disappearance might possibly be drug related, they are musing that the dead body is the result of a car accident and not foul play. The 19-year-old was reported missing by his father on June 4th after going to the store to buy some bread for a Memorial Day celebration when he never returned. The young Erving was notoriously known for his alcohol and drug abuse problem and was in and out of drug rehabilitation programs. Authorities have yet to perform an autopsy, but the description of the body seems to match that of Cory Erving. Court Rules the Rolling Stones Sampled Blues Legend

A U.S. appeals court has ruled that the Rolling Stones improperly borrowed two of their hit songs from blues legend Robert Johnson. The songs in question are "Love in Vain" and "Stop Breakin' Down." They appeared on the Rolling Stones' albums Let it Bleed and Exile on Main Street. The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the Rolling Stones' former record label, ABKCO Music Inc., was wrong to assume that the songs by Johnson were in the public domain simply because his record company, Delta Haze, failed to copyright them in the 1930s. The case will now go to a Los Angeles, California court to determine whether Delta Haze can claim any financial compensation. The Rolling Stones, however, weren't named in the suit. The attorneys representing ABKCO argued that the songs were part of a common musical library, which were used by many musicians at that time. ABKCO attorney Donald Zakarin told the San Francisco Chronicle that "Virtually none of the blues music then was copyrighted by anyone. They all viewed it as available to anyone."

The three-judge panel found that a 1997 law governing the extension of common-law copyright to old music applied to Johnson's work, therefore voiding ABKCO's claim that it was now in the public domain. Johnson died in 1938 at the age of 27. He was allegedly poisoned by a lover's jealous husband. His two only known recording were released in a 2- CD box set on Columbia Records in 1990.

Too Short Discusses the Art of Pimping

Too Short recently hollered about the influence that the city of Oakland, California has had on his career and his choice of topics in his rhymes, in particular, the art of pimping. Too Short said, "Even though Oakland is a helluva a gangsta town. I personally was not fascinated by gangstarism, pistols and guns, and shit. Since I was little, I would have my mother dress me like a pimp. I wouldn't say dress me like a pimp, but let me get that hat. - Some slick hat like the motherfuckers in the movie. I thought I was cool little motherfucker.

"Pimps went to our school. I was in the tenth grade. Pimps were in my high school. Motherfuckers were really dressing flamboyant like some of them old ass movies with gold pieces on their collars and a bunch of gold chains and had prostitutes picking them up after school. To see the shit up close, not in a movie, really made my whole little indulgence that much greater. I never really ever made a move to try to be a pimp like to say bitch, give me your money. But I adapted the ways. And I really learned the shit and consider myself to be of pimp knowledge. And that was a regular thing in Oakland and even to this day, ÔMotherfucker, be like, I'm a pimp. You can't handle hoes like this. You don't disrespect a pimp."

DMX... And Then There Was an Arrest

Hardcore rapper, DMX was indicted yesterday on charges of having an unlicensed 9-mm hand gun and marijuana in his possession after he ran off a highway in Westchester, New York on January 13th. As previously reported, he proclaimed his innocence to a 23-person grand jury on Wednesday. Although DMX wasn't hurt in the accident, he had to be taken to the hospital by paramedics. He left the hospital before police arrived. When police searched the vehicle, they found a 9-mm handgun and marijuana. DMX, born Earl Simmons, said that he didn't know the gun was in the car and police also acknowledged that the sport utility vehicle was borrowed from an acquaintance. DMX was arrested six days later on the gun and marijuana charges. He plead not guilty and was released on a $10,000 bond. The marijuana charge is a simple violation and carries a fine; however, he could face up to seven years in prison if convicted of the gun charge. His current album, And Then There Was X, is currently listed at number 33 on Billboards Top 200 chart.

Jesse Jackson Protests "Suicide"

Reverend Jesse Jackson is up in arms about the alleged suicide of 17-year-old Raynard Johnson in Kokomo, Mississippi. Authorities are stating that the African-American West Marion High School honor student committed suicide on June 15th by hanging himself from a pecan tree in his front yard. Johnson's parents claim that he was receiving negative backlash and harassment from several white residents in his rural town for dating two white girls. According to The Daily News, Norma Williamson, the coroner of Marion County, stated that "He had no marks on him, no other injuries. There were no broken bones, no gunshot wounds, no stab wounds, and he was not beaten up."

Conversely, Reverend Jesse Jackson contests the implication that it was suicide, and implies that Johnson was murdered because of his overt relations with the young women. Jackson believes that the hanging is a horrific example of a modern-day lynching and said, "There was a lot of tension about the interracial datingÉ" Johnson's family supports Jackson's theory and says that the belt used to hang Johnson did not belong to him. The incident is reflective of increased adverse relations between blacks and whites and is reminiscent of the infamous death of James Byrd Jr. Byrd, a black man in Jasper, Texas, was the victim of a racist attack in 1998, when he was dragged by a truck to his death. Jackson also said that the uncle of one of the young women did not approve of his niece dating Johnson. Jackson stated, "We do know that he [the uncle] did not like it." Jackson is calling for the Justice Department to investigate the case.

Police Officers Sentenced in Abner Louima Case

The three remaining police officers involved in the sexual assault of Abner Louima were sentenced on Tuesday. Charles Schwarz was sentenced to 15 years and 8 months for holding down Louima, while Thomas Wiese and Thomas Bruder were given 5 years for trying to cover up the incident. Justin Volpe was previously sentenced to 30 years for ramming a plunger in the rectum of Louima while he was in police custody. Federal Judge Eugene Nickerson handed down the decisions. He said that Schwarz was a lesser participant in the assault though it was a "close call." He said that a life sentence, which Volpe received, "would be far in excess of what is appropriate. Simply put, Volpe, and not Schwarz, wielded the stick, and did so with a truly shocking degree of force." He still didn't downplay Schwarz's involvement, saying, "Having been ordered to take Louima to a holding cell, Mr. Schwarz took him instead in the direction of the bathroom with his pants below his knees. Once inside, Schwarz put his foot on Louima's mouth to silence him when he cried out after being kicked in the groin and then lifted him by the handcuffs and held him in a position while Volpe sodimized him."

Schwarz has been in jail for 13 months since his conviction and will begin his sentence immediately. Wiese and Bruder will begin their prison terms in 45 days. They could have faced 10 years in jail. Schwarz called his conviction "a modern day lynching."

Louima said after the sentencing, "This was a disappointment today. I was hoping for the maximum. But justice was still served. I hope the sentence today sends a clear message that no one is above the law." Louima's next court case will be his $155 million civil lawsuit against the city of New York.

Lauryn Hill Set To Defend Work

Lauryn Hill is scheduled to appear in court to defend her work on her solo debut, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. New Ark Collective were credited for a small fraction of the album, but claim that they did a whole lot more. The lawsuit was filed against Hill and Ruffhouse and Columbia Records in U.S. District Court in Newark, New Jersey.

Isley Brothers Secure Bond Deal

David Pullman, a Wall Street financier, announced on Thursday that he had completed the sale of bonds backed by future royalties of the Isley Brothers' music catalog. Pullman didn't disclose the exact amount, but said it was around the level of his other music securitization deals, which range from $10 million to $55 million. Pullman has secured bond deals for David Bowie, James Brown, and Ashford & Simpson. The bonds secure royalties from artists' future recordings to pay off their debts. The Isley Brothers owe nearly $5 million to creditors.

A federal judge also recently upheld a 1994 verdict against Michael Bolton that entitled the Brothers to $5.4 million. Bolton plagerized one of his biggest hits, "Love is a Wonderful Thing," from the Isleys. In February, Bolton tried to buy the Isley Brothers catalog as a way of acquiring the judgement against himself. Wayans' Parents Offended by "Scary Movie"

Keenen Ivory Wayans' parents are not impressed with his latest efforts. Mr. and Mrs. Wayans left half way during the premiere of his latest film Scary Movie. The new film, Scary Movie, which was written and directed by Keenen Ivory Wayans and stars his brothers, Shawn and Marlon, is a parody of horror films. Apparently the new flick Scary Movie, which premiered at the Kips Bay Theatre in mid-town Manhattan, included some graphic sex scenes that seemed to offend the senior Wayans and sent them exiting the premiere.

According to Fox News, when asked if the talented performer/actor/director Keenan Wayans was going to "get in trouble" by his parents he replied, " He's [his father] a Jehovah's Witness. He probably got out his Bible when he got home. We're going to hear about it." Influenced by famous parodies such as The Naked Gun and Airplane films, the film pokes fun at the horror genre and the recent slasher films the public has been showered with from Scream to The Blair Witch Project .

Harrison Ford Bails Out

Harrison was en-route from New Jersey to Jackson, Wyoming when the crash occurred. He was flying with a friend, Steve Stafford. Luckily, neither one was hurt. The Federal Aviation Administration offered a possible explanation for the crash stating in the Lincoln Journal Star that, "The wind shear caught the wing of the Ford's plane and tossed it off the runway." This is not the first time that Ford has been involved in an airplane crash. Last October the actor was in a minor collision during a training session and crashed his helicopter about 60 miles from Los Angeles, California.
